One of the things to do on our “summer bucket list” was to go on a waterfall hike with Grammy. Luckily, Grammy has been feeling better so we decided it was a good time to invite her to come out with us. The skies were clear and the weather was warm, so we decided to check out Monrovia Canyon Park again. From the nature center, the trail is mostly shaded, but uphill towards the waterfall, so the hike was a little intense in the warm summer heat. We brought lunch along with us, and picked a spot along the trail for a picnic.
Before heading back out towards the waterfall, we stopped to take a few pictures.
Mama and Papa.
Its great to see Grammy all smiles.
Tuggy rested briefly under the trees before continuing on our hike.
Once we arrived at the waterfall, we saw butterflies fluttering everywhere. They were so neat! We found lots of them, on the walls and on the floor near the base of the waterfall. We found out later that they are called “Chalcedon Checkerspot” butterflies, from a sign near the nature center.
Prepared with his bug glass, we were able to trap one for a close look at these neat little creatures.
We caught and released several butterflies after observing them for a few moments. One even sat on my fingers before fluttering away.
Tuggy was having a lot of fun playing in the water and checking out the butterflies… when it was time to go, Tuggy was one unhappy guy.
We headed back down the trail and stopped at the nature center to check out some animals.
Luckily, the only bears around was the statue. 🙂
From the parking lot, we enjoyed once more nice view before heading back home.
